Have you ever wondered how some people seem to be in the best of health almost always while some people fall sick often? It’s because of Ojas. But what is Ojas in Ayurveda? Ojas can be described as a reservoir of energy—both mental and physical. Those with strong Ojas will likely be more immune to ailments and have better immunity and vitality in general.
When you constantly push your body to the extremes, like not getting adequate sleep, not eating a healthy diet, not exercising at all or exercising too much, or experiencing too much stress for a prolonged period of time, the Ojas levels in your body may deplete, in turn affecting your body and mind’s normal functioning.
Now that you know what Ojas is, it’s important to learn how to build and maintain Ojas in your body. This can be done by eating healthy foods and nourishing your body, practicing regular exercise and yoga (but not overdoing it), calming your senses with meditation, sleeping at the right hour, and waking up early. Apart from that, you can also perform self massages (called Abhyanga), and take the necessary herbal supplements under the guidance of an Ayurvedic doctor.
What is Ojas? All you need to know about its importance in Ayurveda?
What Is Ojas?
According to the Ayurvedic concept of Ojas, Ojas is your vigor and radiance. Think of it as the ultimate reserve container of energy and mind. An ancient Ayurvedic expert has defined Ojas as the essence of the Kapha Dosha with the duty to deal with spirituality, mood, and sleep. In the physical sense, it manages issues like physical strength, immunity, reproduction, hormones, skin health, digestion, and cerebrospinal fluids.
Ancient texts say there are eight drops of Ojas in the heart. A subtle substance on the border between body and mind, it helps maintain life and is closely related to immunity. Ojas also pervades the entire body as the essence of honey is present in a flower.
You strengthen your Ojas after your body refines all the essence you eat from plants and other edibles. Even though eating is something you do in minutes and digestion happens in less than a day, the process of making Ojas is not as straightforward. According to Ayurveda texts, once all the seven tissues responsible for organ and system functions (Dhatus) receive nourishment, they produce Ojas after 27-30 days.
The role of Ojas in Ayurveda is to promote a sense of satisfaction. You will have a good spirit that blocks out all the negativity from people who have ill wishes against you. Because Ayurveda promotes a holistic approach to wellness, it’s not difficult to see the Ojas Ayurveda connection.
Ojas and Immunity
If you have a strong Ojas, think of it as this invisible shield that blocks attacks by stress, other psychic maladies, and disorders that result from physical disease-causing agents. As you can tell, there’s a significant role for Ojas in Ayurveda. Since it’s one of the subtle essences, you probably underestimate the value of Ojas, yet it affects every part of your life.
Additionally, someone with a powerful Ojas can convert it into spiritual energy and, eventually, aura. It leads to the energizing of the body and strengthening of the soul. To summarize, all these combine to form strong immunity.
In Ayurveda, Ojas has a direct link to rejuvenation (Rasayana). You miss a lot by being stressed and not seeking time to nourish, rest, and take care of yourself. Regeneration requires you to boost your immunity, get your Doshas back to optimal operation, and slow down the aging process.
Ojas and Pregnancy
For as long as Ayurveda has been around, it has been promoting pregnancy. Ojas helps in conception and drives vitality, strength, and endurance during pregnancy. Ayurveda recommends building up your Ojas months before you even try to conceive.
Ojas nourishes the entire tissue system, which is essential before and during pregnancy. It means replenishing the reproductive fluids and organs in readiness for conception. Building your Ojas reserves will ensure you sail smoothly through conception, pregnancy, and birth.
How to Build Ojas
Ojas takes close to a month to produce, so it’s not something you can build upon quickly once you lose it. It can take you long to recover from the loss of a loved one, a very stressful event, or a long illness. Here are some ways you can build Ojas.
Ojas and Diet
Food is medicine according to Ayurveda. If you take harmful consumables, you shouldn’t expect to get well. Your challenge is to find good healthy prana-rich food, look after your Agni, and it will lead to a healthy buildup of Ojas.
When trying to follow the right diet, choose fresh, sweet, and juicy foods, so make sure the food is fresh and organic. Finally, try to ensure it is appropriate for your Dosha. Examples of foods that can build your Ojas include avocados, nuts, tofu, and sweet potatoes.
Practices to Build Ojas
The simplest way to build your Ojas is through self-massage (Abhyanga). You should try as much as possible to incorporate it into your daily routine. It is also the most effective way of incorporating Ayurveda Ojas. It calms your nerves, nourishes your cell tissues, promotes a sense of well-being and comfort, and ensures a healthy lymphatic system.
Increasing positivity in your life will increase energy and, in turn, your Ojas. Even though Ojas gives you the strength to fight negativity, it can’t hurt to avoid negativity, embracing positive people who encourage you, or being in surroundings that calm you.
Engaging in gentle or aerobic activities like jogging and walking or gentle yoga sessions will do your Ojas a world of good. Yoga reduces constriction and stress and promotes energy flow, the perfect recipe for increasing Ojas.
Ojas encourages adopting a holistic approach to wellness. It’s not just a question of building Ojas; you have to stop wasting whatever you have. Otherwise, it will feel like trying to fill water into a bucket that is full of holes! The practice of maintaining what you have is pratyahara.
Connect with Your Ojas
A simple exercise can help you feel the strength of your Ojas. It involves:
- Finding an isolated spot, getting yourself into a comfortable position, and closing your eyes.
- Relaxing and taking in deep breaths and allowing it to smooth out.
- Taking your mind away from your aches, emotions, and thoughts and sending it down to your belly. Hold it there until you feel a funny sensation and then send that sensation to your heart.
- At that point, try to picture a memory of deep love, like a child’s birth, or when your parents said they were proud of you, and add this memory to the sensation.
- Allow this sensation to fill every cell in your body. Growing this feeling makes you wise and boosts your strength, allowing you to face change, disease, and heartache. Strong love builds Ojas.
